Answers to frequently asked questions about DocuChat.

Is there a free plan or trial?

Yes. The free plan includes 1 chatbot, 7,500 AI Credits per month, 250 pages of source documents, and access to our fastest models (GPT-4o mini, Claude Haiku). No credit card required. Upgrade to Essential or Pro for more AI Credits, frontier models, more chatbots, and document insights.

Can I modify my DocuChat subscription after I have started using it?

Yes, you can upgrade or downgrade your subscription at any time. If you upgrade, you will be charged a prorated amount for the remainder of the billing cycle. If you downgrade, you will be charged the new amount at the start of the next billing cycle.

What are AI Credits and how are they counted?

AI Credits meter your chatbots' usage of the underlying AI models. The cost of a question in Credits depends on:

  • Input tokens — your question, the system prompt, and conversation history
  • Output tokens — the model's response
  • The model itself — fast models like GPT-4o mini cost around 100 Credits per typical question; flagship models like GPT-5.2 or Claude Opus 4.7 can cost 1,800+ Credits

Credits reset at the start of each billing cycle and never roll over. You can monitor usage in your account dashboard.

What happens when I run out of AI Credits?

By default, your chatbot stops answering new questions for the rest of the billing cycle. Existing chats and the dashboard keep working.

If you'd prefer the chatbot to keep answering past the included allowance, paid plans (Essential, Pro, Enterprise) can opt in to extra AI Credits: in your plan settings, turn on Allow extra AI Credits and set your own monthly spend cap. You'll only be billed for what you actually use, never above your cap. This is off by default — overage charges only apply if you turned it on yourself.

What are the monthly page processing limits?

We use a page-based system to track your monthly usage when processing your source documents. Each time a document is processed, it uses up a number of pages based on the number of characters in the document. We consider 1 page to be 3,000 characters. For instance, if you upload a document with 6,000 characters, it will use up 2 pages. Your page usage is reset at the start of each billing cycle. And you can always check your page usage in your account dashboard.

Do I need to provide my OpenAI API key?

No, you don't. We manage all interactions with OpenAI or other AI model providers using our own API keys. (Enterprise plans can optionally connect their own Azure OpenAI account for EU-hosted OpenAI access.)

Are there any additional fees or costs besides the subscription fee?

Your subscription includes a monthly AI Credit allowance, and that's all you pay by default. Paid plans can optionally opt in to extra AI Credits past the included allowance — you set your own monthly spend cap and are only billed for what you use, never above your cap. This is off by default; you'd only ever see an overage charge if you turned it on yourself.

Do you offer refunds?

We offer a 14-day money back guarantee starting from the date of your first subscription purchase. If you are not satisfied with the service within this period, simply contact us at hi@docuchat.io and we will refund your payment.

How do I get longer responses from my chatbot?

To make the bot respond at length, users must set the answer length to "Long" in the chatbot settings to ensure the instruction is combined with extra credits provided to the LLM. It is not sufficient to give custom instructions requesting longer answers - the answer length setting directly controls the maximum number of tokens the AI can generate for each response.

This setting applies regardless of the model used (GPT-4o, GPT-5, etc.) and ensures consistent response length control across all AI models.
